History of Veterans Day

History of Veterans Day
World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”

 National Veterans Day Ceremony
The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year on November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery . The ceremony commences precisely at 11:00 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries. The ceremony is intended to honor and thank all who served in the United States Armed Forces.

Daylight Savings Time

By now, you have probably heard that on Sunday, November 7th, many of us turn our clocks an hour behind.

Standard time  was not established in U.S. law until the Act of March 19, 1918( the Standard Time Act). The act also established daylight saving time, a contentious idea then. Daylight saving time was repealed in 1919, but standard time in time zones remained in law. Daylight time became a local matter. It was re-established nationally early in World War II, and was continuously observed from 9 February 1942 to 30 September 1945. After the war its use varied among states and localities. The Uniform Time Act of 1966 provided standardization in the dates of beginning and end of daylight time in the U.S. but allowed for local exemptions from its observance. The act provided that daylight time begin on the last Sunday in April and end on the last Sunday in October, with the changeover to occur at 2 a.m. local time.
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 changed both the starting and ending dates. Beginning in 2007, daylight time starts on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.

In the United States, the law that governs the use of Daylight Saving Time is known as the Uniform Time Act of 1966. This Act provided a standard for establishing the dates when DST begins and ends in the U.S., while allowing local exemptions from its observance. States that wanted to be exempt from DST could pass a law exempting the entire state. The states of Arizona and Hawaii do not observe DST. However, the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona does. In addition, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Ricoand the U.S. Virgin Islands do not observe DST.
Approximately 70 countries observe DST.

Really…she still has a career?

Really…she still has a career?

I can’t say I feel sorry for actress Lindsay Lohan  who has been  ordered to serve 90 days in jail for missing alcohol counseling sessions in violation of her probation. She probably should not have skipped the court-ordered alcohol-education classes  following her DUI arrest.
Now, says the crying actress  , “I thought I was being compliant….I’m not taking this as a joke. It’s my life, and it’s my career, and it’s something I have worked for my entire life.” Thank you judge for answering  ”There are no excuses.”
Let’s Recap.
  • She’s been to rehab 3 times in her 24 years.
  • She has had 2 (2007) DUI busts.
  • She spent 84 minutes in jail in 2007 after she pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of being under the influence of cocaine and no contest to two counts of driving with a blood-alcohol level above 0.08 percent and one count of reckless driving
  • She will be housed, an all-female jail that was a temporary home to inmates Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. She was ordered to surrender to the court on the morning of July 20.Following her jail time,Los Angeles County’s Century Regional Detention Facility (where all of her celeb buds seem to end up) Lohan must complete 90 days in a drug- and alcohol-rehab facility.
Yet, she still had movie’s coming out! Who would bank on her?Machete,”  is a Robert Rodriguez action film due in theaters in September.  I read that 20th Century Fox,  had no comment about this latest news.
Going to jail and rehab sentence will also delay production on “Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story.”
Going to jail means not being able to promote  her new fashion line, 6126. The first items from the 280-piece collection are shipping out to department stores nationwide this month.
What is it that she doesn’t get? What if she had killed someone with this behavior?

So, am I suppose to be a “Real Housewife”?

By now you have probably heard of the “Real Housewives” series on Bravo. There are “Real Housewives” of New Jersey, New York, Orange County, and Atlanta. On the way are the Housewives of DC and Houston and who knows where else.
First of all, I hate the word “Housewife”.
It reminds me  of those high-heeled, apron wearing, appliance loving women whose life revolved around everything that has to do with a dinner table. Haven’t we evolved?
Having said that, I must admit, I do watch Bravo TV’s Real Housewives. I relate to the women at times and I question the reality of what I’m viewing at other times. It’s my fix kind of like what any of those sports channels would be to my male counterparts.
My biggest question is, what makes the “Real”?
I don’t know anyone like these women. Of course, I live in the middle of no-where. Where I live you’d be embarrassed to drive around in a high-ticket sports car, wearing head-to-toe diamonds, and living the lifestyle that these women portray. The funny thing is, these women sport the nice life and then we later find out in the media that they have filed for bankruptcy protection or their hubbies have dumped them.
So, who is the “Real Housewife”? Me or them? From what I can see, a “Real Housewife” is probably a women who works part or full time in or out of the home. She raises her kids, occasionally mows the lawn or does some kind of handy work, and she is very concerned about the family finances. After all, we have evolved into an ‘equal partner’ with brains. Haven’t we?
Will I keep watching? You bet!

Took the Quiz and Nearly Flunked It!

That’s right…nearly flunked it. Well, I scored a “C” which isn’t gonna get me into a good mommy college…
I love Cafemom which is why I took the Momindex
quiz.

The MomIndex is a new quarterly survey of American moms tracking quality of life, outlook, and how moms feel about themselves, their kids, relationships, money & the larger world.
I scored a 74. The average was 76.4. I think I tanked because I had a discipline issue earlier in the day with my daughter.
Here’s what they are telling me;

CONNECTIONS

Your score was Average.
No mom is an island, so where do you turn for advice and support when the going gets tough? Connections with friends and communities outside the home are an important driver of life satisfaction for moms. Here are a few suggestions for ways moms can improve their connections and increase life satisfaction:
Invest in creating and maintaining friendships – set aside time to call friends regularly
Network with other moms – you can find other moms at your kids’ school, in local mom groups, or in online communities
Find opportunities to contribute to and get more involved in your local community, whether that’s baking cookies for a neighbor or volunteering at a local non-profit organization
CafeMom is a great place to foster connections with other moms.

CONTROL

Self Expression

Your score was Average.
Remember the days when you dreamed of being a writer, singer, dancer, artist, or whatever? That part of you didn’t disappear when you had kids, which is why finding outlets for your talents can be a great way to improve your life satisfaction. Here are a few suggestions for ways moms can express themselves more and improve their life satisfaction:
Take a regularly scheduled time-out for “me” time – away from demands of other roles and responsibilities
Discover a new area of personal challenge – explore a hobby or interest, take a class, or get a part-time job or work from home opportunity
Seek outlets to express yourself – photography, writing, music, dancing, or whatever you enjoy
CafeMom provides outlets and communities that encourage self expression.
Find groups for photography, writing, scrapbooking, and much more
Express yourself by customizing your own profile page and creating custom signatures
Share your expertise and wisdom by offering answers to other moms’ questions
Interestingly enough, Cafe Mom is saying this about their ‘survey’;Only 50 percent of those polled are satisfied with their sex life (they have sex, on average, 1.5 times a week) but 85 percent agree that their marriage is strong, and 80 percent would choose the same partner again.
87 percent say that healthy eating for their children is a top priority, but only 60 percent make it a top priority for themselves
Women with five children or more pray 76 percent more often than women with one child; moms of teens pray more often than other Moms, and the age of 16, (when children start driving in most states), is a peak time for prayer. Only 31 percent agree they are happy with their appearance.
A surprising 45 percent of moms want to lose more than 25 lbs and 36 percent of moms rarely or never exercise.
61 percent of moms surveyed indicate they do not have enough free time for themselves, and only 39 percent agree they feel challenged and able to express their talents.
I’m feeling those connections coming on now….

My new showerhead…saves money and water

Well this is cool… I needed a new and just found this…
showerhead photo
The average household could save more than 2,300 gallons per year by installing WaterSense labeled showerheads. Since these water savings will reduce demands on water heaters, households will also save energy. In fact, a household could save 300 kilowatt hours of electricity annually, enough to power its television use for about a year. If every household in the United States installed WaterSense labeled showerheads, we could save more than $1.5 billion in water utility bills and more than 250 billion gallons of water annually, which could supply more than 2.5 million U.S. homes with their water needs for a year. In addition, we could avoid about $2.5 billion in energy costs for heating water.

The WaterSense Label

All products bearing the WaterSense label must be tested and certified by an approved third party laboratory to ensure they meet EPA water efficiency and performance criteria.
Did you know that standard showerheads use 2.5 gallons of water per minute (gpm)? Showerheads that earn the WaterSense label must demonstrate that they use no more than 2.0 gpm. The WaterSense label also ensures that these products provide a satisfactory shower that is equal to or better than conventional showerheads on the market.

Performance Is Key

As with all WaterSense specifications, EPA included performance criteria to ensure that consumers will not have to sacrifice a good shower in order to achieve water savings. EPA worked with a variety of stakeholders—including consumers who tested various showerheads—to develop criteria for water coverage and spray intensity. Independent laboratories test showerheads for these attributes before certifying them to earn the WaterSense label.

Bashing Breastfeeding

We know that breast feeding isn’t for everyone.  In an article in  Mother & Baby Magazine’s July issue,  deputy editor Kathryn Blundell stated she bottle fed because she did not want to put her “fun bags” in a “bawling baby’s mouth”.
What does “fun bags” in a “bawling baby’s mouth” mean?
Mother & Baby magazine is read by thousands of pregnant and new mothers. You would assume that many readers are  reading it for advice on how to manage  motherhood. why would the other editors stand behind this statement?
This deputy editor went on to say:
“Even the convenience and supposed health benefits of breast milk couldn’t induce me to stick my nipple into a bawling baby’s mouth.”
She goes on to say that she wanted her “body back” and to give her “boobs at least a chance to stay on my chest rather than dangling around my stomach”.
Of her breasts, she adds: “They’re part of my sexuality too – not just breasts, but fun bags.”And when you have that attitude (and I admit I made no attempt to change it), seeing your baby latching on where only a lover has been before feels, well, a little creepy.”
Maybe there is a lack of maturity in some of us having difficulty seperating motherhood from sexuality.
She’s not the only “boob” in the latest news about breastfeeding . Kim Kardashian blasted a woman who was nursing her baby in a public restaurant.
“EWW Im at lunch, the woman at the table next 2 me is breast feeding her baby with no coverup then puts baby on the table and changes her diaper [sic],” Kardashian tweeted.
Later that day, she tweeted:  ”My sister breast feeds! Its a natural beautiful thing, there’s nothing wrong w it, but she covers herself, not w her boobs exposed” [sic]
Kim..you posed in Playboy- hello!

We may be eating 67 pesticides? Food Safety Basics

The Environmental Working Group. says that we may be ingesting 67 pesticides in the fruits and vegetables that we eat.
The group is a nonprofit focused on public health. In a reprt from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration they mention what fruits and vegetables we eat have the highest, and lowest, amounts of chemical residue.

Most alarming are the fruits and vegetables dubbed the “Dirty Dozen,” which contain 47 to 67 pesticides per serving. These foods are believed to be most susceptible because they have soft skin that tends to absorb more pesticides.
The group suggests limiting consumption of pesticides by purchasing organic for the 12 fruits and vegetables.
The Dirty Dozen
Celery
Peaches
Strawberries
Apples
Domestic blueberries
Nectarines
Sweet bell peppers
Spinach, kale and collard greens
Cherries
Potatoes
Imported grapes
Lettuce

The group found a number of non-organic fruits and vegetables dubbed the “Clean 15″ that contained little to no pesticides.
The Clean 15
Onions
Avocados
Sweet corn
Pineapples
Mango
Sweet peas
Asparagus
Kiwi fruit
Cabbage
Eggplant
Cantaloupe
Watermelon
Grapefruit
Sweet potatoes
Sweet onions

FYI- the cdc Suggest this food Safety Basics for Fruits and Vegetables

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 recommend that you eat fruit and vegetables everyday to help promote good health.   As you strive to meet your individual recommendation, remember that proper handling and preparation can reduce the risk of food contamination and foodborne illness.

To minimize your risk, keep these in mind when selecting and preparing fruits and vegetables.

Carefully select fresh fruits and vegetables. When shopping, look for produce that is not damaged or bruised and make sure that pre-cut produce is refrigerated or surrounded by ice.

Rinse all fruits and vegetables before eating. This recommendation also applies to produce with rinds or skins that are not eaten. Rinse produce just before preparing or eating to avoid premature spoilage. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Clean all surfaces and utensils with soap and hot water, including cutting boards, peelers, counter tops, and knives that will touch fresh produce. Wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling fresh fruits and vegetables.
  2. Rinse fresh fruits and vegetables, including those with skins and rinds that are not eaten, under clean running water and avoid using detergents or bleach. Remove the outer leaves of leafy vegetables such as lettuce and cabbage before washing. Produce with firm skin, such as potatoes, may require rubbing with a vegetable brush while rinsing under clean running water to remove all soil.
  3. Dry fruits and vegetables with a clean paper towel and prepare, cook, or eat.
  4. Packaged produce labeled “ready to eat,” “pre-washed,” or “triple washed” can be used without further washing.
clean, seperate, don't cross-contaminate, refrigerate

Keep produce separate from raw foods like meat, poultry, and seafood, in your shopping cart, grocery bags and in your refrigerator. Throw away any produce that will not be cooked if it has touched raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs. Do not use the same cutting board without cleaning with hot water and soap before and after preparing fresh fruits and vegetables.

Refrigerate all cut, peeled, or cooked produce within 2 hours. After a certain time, harmful bacteria may grow on produce and increase the risk of foodborne illness.
